Every home should have clean and healthy water to drink. Unfortunately, you cannot assume that your tap water is free of contaminants and pollutants. There may be chemicals, metals, salts, and bacteria in your drinking water. There are different types of home water filters you can use to purify the water coming out of your tap.

Activated Carbon Home Water Filters

Activated carbon water filters are the most affordable types. They are found in common water pitcher filters, faucet attachment filters, and refrigerator filters. They are sometimes used in conjunction with other types of home water filters. Activated carbon filters remove chlorine, which is added to most municipal water. They also filter out unhealthy volatile organic compounds, pesticides, sediment, and pharmaceutical residue.

Reverse Osmosis Technology

Reverse osmosis home water filters are popular because they filter out a wide range of contaminants. Reverse osmosis forces water through a semipermeable membrane to remove fluoride, lead, copper, chromium, bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. The downside is that these water filters waste a lot of water.

Water Distillation

The process of water distillation is simple. Water is boiled, it evaporates, and then it condenses in a separate container in a purer form. When it evaporates, heavier particles are left behind, like lead, bacteria, viruses, sulfate, and other organic chemicals, Distillation does require electricity, and takes a long time to complete the process.

UV Home Water Filters

Ultraviolet light attacks the DNA of microorganisms so that they can’t replicate. UV water filters should be used in areas where bacteria and viruses are a problem in the water supply. They don’t remove any other types of pollutants, so they should be used in addition to other types of water filters.

To choose the best type of water filter for your home and area, have your water tested at home. Hire a professional to test your water for contaminants and pollutants.
